Survey Analysis

Survey Results Analysis

A sure-fire way to making a successful movie is to appeal to the audiences likes, to achieve this we took to surveymonkey and asked our audience what they would prefer to see in our urban drama. We needed at least 80 responses to have a good sample size to actually base anything off the audience ideas and we managed to get around 115 responses.

1. How old are you?

The first question was just to gauge the age ranges of our audience and how far we should go with the violent themes we may have wanted to add, from the survey above you can see that most of our audience are around 15-17 which is around 67% of our total responses. Over 25 comes second with 15% and then 14 and 10% subsequently. With this information we know that we can add violent themes as 15-17 and over 25 are the majority of our audience allowing us to show higher rated themes without having to worry so much about consequences.

2. What age would you expect the actors to be in an urban drama?

There is an overwhelming majority of people who chose 18-24 as the ideal age of an actor in an urban drama. However compromises have to be made unfortunately, we do not have access to anyone within that age range and so we have to use a 16 year old. To combat this however, we will be making sure not to skip or rush anything when making our actor look rugged, old and beaten (as in by the environment) We will not cut corners with the actors preparation.

3. Where would you expect an urban drama to be located?
City centre was the most picked option here with 49% and something that I would expect, this location conforms to the common representations of an urban drama and is something very accessible to us as a location to film. We already have had ideas about filing in a city centre, the only problem being if people are caught on film and we need to ask for permission. This means that we have a more adamant reason to now want to film in a city centre if we're having second thoughts.  Council houses came in at second with a 36% rate which also makes a lot of sense since council houses is where most of the troubled kids are bought up due to lack of money or there parents.

4. Urban dramas are usually based around an issue young people are facing in society, which issues are you interested in?
We gave the audience a lot of options for this question and enabled them to pick more than one option as we can cover more than one issue in our movie. The most picked option was drugs at 57%, and is something that we can easily emulate or fake and conforms to the common representations of troubled teens. We did have an idea about involving drugs into our movie at the beginning of the barnstorming phase, but as we developed out idea further we eventually scrapped that and went for a different idea. Gangs came in at a close second at 54% but is something which would require more actors to portray and isn't something we can include in our movie, this is because our idea revolves around the story of a homeless teen. Overall the responses in this question was great as most of the options were very close in percentage.

5. What props would you like to see to convey these issues?
Most of these questions are based on our previous ideas for our movie which did include a murder scene, but after discussion we decided to hold off on that idea as our genre is an urban drama, and so we decided to pitch an idea around the struggles of a homeless girl. Obviously there isn't many props that can actually be used by a homeless person as they have very little, but we have had an idea to give her a special keepsake of some sort, whether it be a pendant or a necklace. Something of sentimental value to her.

6. What would you like the characters to look like?
Young and vulnerable was the most picked option here and something that we enjoy to see, we are planning on using a girl for our movie and so it immediately ties into the idea of the character being young and vulnerable. This was however after debating whether or not we wanted to use a guy as our character. We will be incorporating more than one theme into our character however as she will be young, vulnerable and rugged.

7. What sound would you expect to hear in an urban drama?

Again, these questions were based off out old idea of having the movie portray a troubled teen from a troubled home but have since changed it to more of a homeless theme. And so the sound that we can use is very limited as she herself would not have access to music, so we are limited to using more background soundtracks of slow, classical music to emphasize her isolation and situation.

8. What arrangement of title would you like an urban drama to have?
Straight forward and simple question. We're thinking of using single words of synonyms of homeless, cold or lonely.

9. Other than the protagonist (main character) what characters would you like to see?
Back when we we're thinking of using a murder scene this question would have had more relevance, victim did come in as the most popular answer and our homeless person is a victim. We're thinking about having her keepsake mugged by another character. By limiting the amount of characters in the movie we're trying to keep the theme of her being lonely and isolated consistent and prominent throughout.

10. What time of day/lighting would like to see in the opening to an urban drama?

Evening was the most picked option at 55%, and is something that we are going to go with. Too set a depressing mood we are going to keep the lighting at a low, cold looking temperature.
