Making a mask

Making a mask

Inspiration

To get inspiration for this task I looked at masks made from burlap sacks on Google. These are the ideas I found.

I like the use of stitching across the face and how a zip has been used in the bottom left image. I am going to use these ideas in my burlap mask.

My mask

Here is a video of me making my mask and the process I went through.
First I cut off the bottom of the burlap sack because it was too long for a mask and there would be too much material bunched around the neck as it would not pass the shoulders.

Next I put the sack over my head to try and work out where the features needed to be for the mask to fit on someone's head. Next I put the zip on where the mouth is by sewing over the burlap and after the zip was sewn on I made sure the zip was open then turned the burlap sack inside out and cut a line where the zip opens so it works like a mouth.

After the zip mouth was in place I worked out where the eyes needed to be ad cut holes where my eyes were in relation to the mouth. I had cut one eye hole smaller than the other so to add to this I used some of the extra burlap to sew across the eye so it was deliberately smaller.

From here I put some stiches across the top left corner of the burlap mask to add some extra detail. I then pulled some of the individual strands from the burlap to gather up the material and make the effect of an ear.

I then looked at the mask and decided it needed more colour so I used sharpie to add red under the larger eye and a black sharpie to add some long eye lashes.

Finally I shaped the mask by doing the same thing that I did to create the idea of ears at the bottom (around the neck).

This is the completed mask. I am happy with how may mask turned out because it has the aspects of the inspiration that I liked and it looks ...

Evaluation

I like the way my mask has turned out. My favourite part of my mask is the use of the zip as it could be interpreted in different ways as to why a zip was used. If I were to do this again I would make it more accurate as I had to use the stitches across the corner to sew the corner together because the face was not in the middle. Also, after I had taken in the bottom to add some shape to mask I tried to put the mask on and it did not fit over my head.

Audience feedback

When I showed my mask to my class they said they liked to used of a zip and the thick black stitching to go with the thick black zip. However, they thought the eyelashes should have been stitched on as well to go with the big black zip and stitching.
