Research: Costumes

Costumes in Media

Costumes are a huge and integral part of film, it has the ability to provide the audience with key information such as gender, time period and the theme of the movie. Costumes are much more than just what they appear to be on screen they add authenticity to the movie, well dressed actors can give off a vibe of being more professional and immediately fill the criteria of being a high-class film. Costumes have to be well maintained, handled with professional care, and fitted perfectly to the specific actor wearing it. Costumes aren't bought often, they are made for the movie and is the reason why so much effort and care goes towards them, it has to be made sure that the costume isn't too attention grabbing (taking the audience away from the actor) but isn't too subtle so that it dosen't give an impression, it is this balance which makes costumes a difficult role in film.

Costumes are one of the tools used by a director to tell a story and it is the designers challenge to help full fill and maximise their potential to allow the directors script to be bought to life. Costumes vary from movie to movie however can have similarities within their genre and sub-genre. An example of a movie which has a lot of different costumes is The Avengers series which follows Marvels Superhero's protecting the world against evil. Since there are a lot of personalities and different superhero powers every costumes has to cater towards both them as a person and somehow tie in with their superhero power.

Hawkeye and Ironman are two very different characters both part of the avengers squad to fight against evil, however differ greatly in what they wear and how they fight. Tony Stark (Ironman) is a billionaire who owns a company and wears a very high-tech, priceless piece of technology which aids him to fight against evil. The suit comes with many features which allows a mere mortal to fight against the most powerful foe's, Tony Stark is nothing without his suit while Hawkeye relies more on his abilities as an archer and his combat suit is more of an assistance and supporter which cleverly holds arrows and protects him from hard blows. The contrast in how different the two are in terms of technology is vast, and shows how costume is used to cater towards the character to show their status.

To evaluate, I think the costume department is easily overlooked frequently even thought it is prominant throughout the whole film. People easily gloss over the time and thought that goes into making, devolping costumes for characters and all the interquit details that is put into them. After researching about them and reasing blogs from well-known costume desginers, I have grown to realise their improtance and have a larger respect for them aswell as knowing their stance in the production of the film. They are by far one of the biggest contribitours to the success of a film.
